Tim Brown is obsessed with improving corporate social responsibility. Realistic but cynical, I have been trying to come up with ways that corporations can be made to work for society and the environment, rather than the opposite. To a large extent corporations do provide a valuable service by spreading risk to many people and limiting individual liability. The key to getting everybody working in the same direction is to set up the right balance of carrots and sticks to keep corporations onside with the laws and norms of society. All of this is to say that I have been working on two different projects that will hopefully lead to some interesting learning and change: TCBCO.ca is a consulting firm that I am involved with that specializes in CSR, reputation and risk management. This site includes CSR News updates and project descriptions. cor-pob-li-ga-tion.com is a more critical news and analysis project that is working towards promoting the concept of binding corporate obligations. While not always legal, these obligations are or will be enforceable through legal and extra-legal means (disclosure, monitoring, shareholder motions, media and NGO advocacy).
