Multi-Member Proportional Representation | Print |  E-mail

I am adding my voice to the chorus supporting the adoption of Multi-Member Proportional Representation (MMP) for provincial elections in Ontario.

As a concerned voter, I am excited by the non-partisan support for the initiative

The three of us reflect three competing, democratic, partisan traditions in Ontario. We differ on many matters of public policy. We strongly unite, however, in our commitment to an electoral system that is democratic in more than name. The Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform produced an imaginative and practical proposal that will give us more choice, fairer results and stronger representation. We urge all Ontarians to come together and vote Yes for MMP in the October 10 referendum.”

I am not a fan of the acronym but the system makes sense

MMP and the name multimember proportional representation do not exactly roll off the tongue but the system creates a legislature that better represents voters based on their support for parties. This ensures that more voices are heard and that votes are not wasted. Too often, elections become a choice between two bad options where you have to choose between the worse and the worst; rather than choosing your preferred party. Now a vote for a third or fourth party will not be wasted.

There is a fear that this could lead to fragmentation of political parties and extremism; however, in typical fashion the proposed Ontario system maintains seats for ridings and sets a minimum percentage of the vote that a party must receive before it gains a seat in the legislature.
